Developing a Caregiver-Inclusive Workplace Standard

PHASE 1: Caregiver Friendly Workplaces

In 2012, more than 5.6 million employees in Canada (approximately 35% of the workforce) had adult/elder care responsibilities. Lack of workplace support via caregiver-friendly workplace practices (CFWPs) can result in caregiver-employees (CEs) leaving the workforce, and/or missed work days, early retirements, reduced productivity, health consequences and increased avoidable costs to employers. The realization of a Canadian Caregiver-Inclusive Workplace (CIW) Standard, together with the knowledge mobilization strategy to accompany its national dissemination and uptake, operates as the focus of this project. Realizing the CFW Standard not only supports public policy as related to work/life balance, but provides an enhanced business strategy for employers to improve company loyalty and aid in recruiting and retaining talented employees, among other benefits. This project is funded by SSHRC/CIHR Healthy and Productive Work – Partnership Development Grant (2015 – 2017) FRN: SSHRC 890-2016-3018 HPW 145001.
